Our Story

Overview

Building Baja’s Future (BBF) is a nonprofit organization based in Baja California Sur, Mexico. BBF is a world-class organization committed to helping educate bright, ambitious teenagers determined to overcome limited opportunities to reach their full potential as individuals and become community leaders. BBF is also a nonprofit corporation incorporated in California. These designations allow BBF to grow through the support of its friends and supporters.

BBF awards deserving young men and women scholarships for their college education. With BBF, young scholars also gain access to well-rounded programs where their talents are recognized, nurtured, and strengthened.

BBF believes that by providing opportunities through education, it helps improve the quality of life of its students. BBF’s work ultimately helps students understand and apply the enlightening and life-changing possibilities of higher education.

Does more than provide college scholarship aid to economically-challenged students. BBF also work to identify areas of life and learning that some of its scholars missed out on at home or at school.

Our History

The seed for BBF was planted in 2006. At that time, Cecilia Portilla, and her husband, Jacinto Avalos, along with two friends, began offering college scholarships to a few well-deserving Los Cabos college students. With the promise these young students demonstrated, a decision was made to quickly formalize the effort. By 2008, more than 30 young scholars had received financial help for college.

BBF was incorporated in early 2012 and began offering specialized programming to scholars in areas that go beyond financial support. Next, BBF expanded its offerings to help as many young college-aged men and women as possible. In fact, the number of BBF scholars has grown exponentially since 2008.

The BBF Tree of Life

In eight critical areas, what we call the BBF Tree of Life, our students receive the support and assistance they need to grow into whole and conscientious individuals.

Current Technology

We help our students understand and work with new technology and software. Many students have not had adequate exposure or training in current technologies.

Economic Assistance

Too many of our students struggle financially. To thrive in school, they will need more from us than academic scholarships. That’s why BBF offers help with transportation, housing, seminars, books and school supplies.

Artistic Expression

BBF offers classes in corporal expression, dance and other forms of self-expression to help them become fully-rounded individuals.

Emotional Help

Our students know that they will receive the support they need as they negotiate new terrain, work to solve difficult problems or meet new and unique challenges.

Health Assistance and Physical Activity

We offer yoga classes, swimming lessons, and we provide medical assistance if needed.

Cultural Life

Our students attend concerts and performances, where they are exposed to the arts and learn about the important role that the arts play in our society.

Psychological Help

Counseling and therapy is available for our students when needed. This time of life brings with it many challenges. Some emanate from home and family, sometimes from school. Whether problems are rooted in the present or the past, we support and help our scholars so that they may thrive.

Social Life

A full life includes social activities. Our scholars attend parties, take outings, field trips and go camping. Together we celebrate birthdays and accomplishments.
